Expedition to the Roof of Spain: Montaña Blanca Trail

This is not an ordinary excursion — it is a pilgrimage to the heart of the volcano, a physical and mental challenge rewarded with a view accessible only to a few. We set off from the Montaña Blanca parking area, leaving behind green Tenerife to enter a landscape straight out of Mars. Here the earth changes color from beige pumice to deep black lava, and the air becomes thinner and crystal clear.

We guarantee the tour’s departure regardless of the number of participants. We travel in small groups (maximum 8 people), which means that for smaller bookings, other guests may join the group. However, the tour will take place even with as few as two people.

Additional information:

From January 19, 2026, it is mandatory to purchase tickets for each of the two stages of the route: PNT 07 (from the parking area to the viewpoint terrace) and PNT 10 (from the viewpoint terrace to the summit), priced respectively at €6 per person on weekdays and €10 per person on weekends (PNT 07), and €15 (PNT 10).

Children up to 14 years of age are not required to have a ticket — this information does not apply to our tours, as the minimum age is 16.

NOTE: As the number of entries per day is limited to 300, the excursion must be planned well in advance. Once the date and time are agreed, we collect participants’ personal data in order to make the reservation.

Difficulty level: High. The route requires very good physical condition and no contraindications for being at high altitude (risk of altitude sickness).

Trekking boots: Essential. Volcanic rock is sharp and unstable — “sneakers” are not sufficient here.

Warm clothing: Even in summer, temperatures near the summit can be close to zero with icy winds. A jacket, hat, and thermal layers are mandatory.

Water and food: Minimum 2–3 liters of water per person and high-energy snacks. There are no shops along the route.

Stages of the ascent:

Pumice Fields and Dragon Eggs (Los Huevos del Teide)

The beginning of the route is deceptively gentle. A wide path leads across the light-colored slopes of Montaña Blanca. Here we encounter gigantic black volcanic boulders known as the “Eggs of Teide.” They look as if they were left behind by mythical beasts or rolled down from the crater during ancient eruptions. Their black color against the pale sand creates a surreal, almost artistic contrast.

Ascent to the Refuge (3,260 m a.s.l.)

Here the jokes end and the real climb begins. The path narrows and starts to zigzag steeply upward. Fighting the gradient and thinner air, we reach Refugio de Altavista. Although the refuge is currently closed for overnight stays, it remains a key landmark at 3,260 m above sea level and a perfect place for a break to catch your breath and look at the volcano’s shadow cast over the ocean.

La Rambleta Terrace (3,555 m a.s.l.)

The final stage of the ascent leads over solidified lava flows to the upper cable car station. This is where most tourists end their journey, admiring the panorama of the archipelago. We are above the clouds, in the realm of sun and wind.

Crater: Infernal Summit (VIP / Limited Option)

For those who book the excursion well in advance, we try to obtain a permit to enter the very summit — Pico del Teide (3,718 m a.s.l.). This is the final 160 vertical meters, where the smell of sulfur from fumaroles is noticeable and the view encompasses all the Canary Islands.

Note: Access to the summit is strictly limited by the National Park and depends on the availability of named permits.

This is a high-mountain challenge. The body reacts differently at this altitude, and the weather is unpredictable.
