Western Odyssey: Cliffs, Volcanoes and the Wine of Kings

Start from the North

This is a spectacular journey along the western coast all the way to the lunar landscapes of Mount Teide. The excursion starts and ends in Puerto de la Cruz, taking you through the most diverse climatic zones of the island. As with the northern route, this itinerary is rich in viewpoints where we will stop to take in the power of the ocean and the mountains.

To make the most of the day and ensure we see all the planned attractions, we highly recommend bringing your own provisions (e.g., sandwiches). Our sightseeing schedule is intense, while the local pace of life can be… unhurried. Waiting times in restaurants—even for simple dishes—can take up to an hour, so having your own snacks is the best way to avoid losing precious moments waiting at a table.

 

We guarantee the tour’s departure regardless of the number of participants. We travel in small groups (maximum 8 people), which means that for smaller bookings, other guests may join the group. However, the tour will take place even with as few as two people.

Additional information:

Worth bringing: trekking shoes or at least sports footwear. A warm sweatshirt/windbreaker and comfortable long trousers are also good to have, even if just in a backpack.

What we will see along the route:

Las Ruinas de Gordejuela

Extremely photogenic ruins of the first water pumping station in Tenerife, built at the beginning of the 20th century. The abandoned industrial building “clinging” to a steep cliff creates an incredible contrast with the blue of the ocean, resembling a post-apocalyptic movie setting.

Fortín de San Fernando

A small, historic 18th-century fortification that once defended the coast against pirates. Located in a picturesque setting of palms and greenery (in the Rambla de Castro area), it offers an excellent view of the rugged northern coastline.

Garachico

A town that rose like a phoenix from the ashes after the volcanic eruption of 1706, which flooded the former port with lava. Today it is one of the most beautiful places on the island, famous for El Caletón – natural rock pools formed by solidified lava flowing into the ocean.

Masca

A village hidden deep in a gorge, reached by one of the most exciting and winding roads in Europe. Known as the “Canarian Machu Picchu,” this former pirate hideout offers dramatic views of jagged peaks and sheer canyon walls. We will stop here for a coffee with an absolutely spectacular view, to absorb this unique atmosphere without rushing. It is worth remembering that a full hike through the gorge is a demanding, many-hour expedition, which is why we focus on enjoying the panorama and relaxing in this extraordinary setting.

Los Gigantes

Monumental cliffs, called by the Guanches the “Walls of Hell,” rising straight from the ocean to heights of up to 600 meters. We will stop at a viewpoint from which the immense scale of these rock giants plunging into the water can best be seen.

Teide National Park

Ascending to over 2,000 meters above sea level is like a journey to another planet – from green forests we drive straight into a raw, lunar landscape at the foot of Spain’s highest peak. We will see rivers of solidified lava, bizarre rock formations, and, if the weather allows, a “sea of clouds” spreading out beneath our feet.
