Symphony of Water and Rock: Afur – Tamadite – Taganana Loop

This route is a journey into the heart of Tenerife’s hydrological mystery. The loop starting in picturesque Afur, where time flows more slowly among traditional stone houses, is one of the few on the island where the sound of water accompanies us almost the entire way — whether from a stream in a ravine or the mighty Atlantic Ocean. It is the essence of the Anaga Mountains: lush greenery, steep slopes, and mystery hidden in black sand.

We guarantee the tour’s departure regardless of the number of participants. We travel in small groups (maximum 8 people), which means that for smaller bookings, other guests may join the group. However, the tour will take place even with as few as two people.

Climb Toward the Panorama (La Meseta)

We begin the hike unusually, with a warm-up for the muscles. From Afur, we head uphill along an asphalt ribbon (approx. 600 m) toward La Meseta. This is the moment when civilization is left behind and a green tunnel opens in front of you, leading to Cumbrecilla. From this natural “balcony” there is a spectacular view of two valleys at once — a moment when the vastness of the Anaga Mountains can truly be felt.

The Breath of Taganana

The trail runs through fairy-tale forests, at times brushing the edges of the famous white village of Taganana. Although we do not enter the very center, the landscape of vineyards suspended on steep slopes and the view of the boundless ocean create an unforgettable backdrop for the descent toward the coast.

Tamadite Beach – Home of the Last Eels

Descending to sea level, we reach the wild, volcanic Tamadite Beach. This place is magical and raw. The mouth of the ravine (Barranco de Afur) creates a unique ecosystem here — it is one of the last places in the Canary Islands where eels still live in the fresh waters of a stream. The sound of waves crashing against pebbles and black sand allows for a moment of total reset.

Return Through the Afur Ravine

The return route is a climb along the riverbed, in the shade of the gigantic walls of the ravine. Humidity, birdsong, and omnipresent greenery make this section resemble scenery from “The Lost World.”

This is a beautiful but long and demanding route. It should be approached with respect.

Distance: 11.1 km (loop)

Hiking time: 4.5–5 hours (moderate pace, without long breaks)

Elevation gain: 667 meters (the total ascent is noticeable)

Difficulty level: Medium/Demanding

Safety note: Tamadite Beach, despite its beauty, is extremely dangerous for swimming due to strong currents and waves. Admire the ocean from the shore — entering the water here is risky.

Terrain: The ravine path can be slippery and muddy after rain. Solid trekking shoes with good grip are essential. Remember to carry enough water; there are no shops along the route (only in Afur at the start/end).
